Every year I feel inspired to celebrate winter solstice. This fascinates me because I'm not drawn to celebrating summer solstice or either of the equinoxes. But winter solstice, I notice.

Is it because this time of year feels so generally frantic that I crave the quiet ritual winter solstice requires?

Whatever the reason, one day this week we'll turn off all the lights and screens in the house, light enough candles to see and eat a meal by candlelight.

If it's dinner, we may keep the lights off and the candles lit until it's time to go to bed.

Lighting the house by candlelight changes the whole feel of our time together, seemingly strengthening our connection to one another.

I wonder if connecting with a flame of light reminds us of the internal light burning inside each of us?

For our little bit of play this week, let's celebrate the returning light and the light within all of us with a candlelit meal.

Invite friends over if you like or enjoy a solo meal to connect more deeply with yourself or share this ritual with your family. All are beautiful ways to celebrate this time of year.
